On poor starting and smoke. If you are getting white or grey smoke smelling very strongly of diesel, then this is called diesel "fog" and you will get it from several reasons. Sometimes it is from a fuel-flooded motor because of trying to start it when it is too cold and/or the motor not turning over fast enough and/or the compression being low. But if the engine is generally OK, and the battery is spinnning the motor at a good clip - then it is probably either water and crud in the fuel or an injector that is spurting fluid instead of spraying a mist. The cure is the same in either case. Drain the fuel, throw it away, replace with good fuel. This means draining the tank and filter housing and swabbing them both out. Add some injector cleaner to the fresh fuel. Good luck. Most diesel problems are simply fuel problems or not enough cranking speed.

Hydraulic systems that use one open center pump to work the loader and the 3pt are always somewhat of a compromise. The problem is that there has to be some way to select where the fluid is to go. It can either be manually - which is a pain to do every time...... or it could be an automatic priority valve type - which ends up sending fluid several places at once and therefore makes some of the systems work slowly.
From what you say, I suspect that "modular control box". fits what I've written above. Does it have any type of knob or lever that you throw to use the loader vs the 3pt, or is it the automatic priority valve type? Those automatic types do need service from time to time and you would never know it unless you measure the return flow and find that it is larger than it needs to be. Hopefully the modular control came from GB, because they are very responsive to customers who contact them. If the modular control is what I think it is, it would be universal in function and could be recalibrated by most any hydraulic repair shop.

The TA on the old IH tractors was the "torque amplifier" and was engaged by a hand-pulled lever on the left side of the tractor. I don't know exactly what it did, but if you pulled that lever when you began to bog down then it would lower the gearing about half of a normal shift and somethimes that would be enough to get you going again.
I shudder to remember myself and other kids riding on plows and other drawn implements. I think a lot of that casual attitude came from horse-drawn implements. Hay rakes -referred to as "widow-makers" - were built with a seat for the operator right in front of the tines.

Hi Bojo!....Darn!....That was all tractor info and qualifications that I had written in the answer that got lost. To prevent the same thing from happening again, I think I'll begin to recopy some messages that I respond to. Then I won't have to go back and forth - because I've discovered that doing so is what erases the text. So if you see your message repeated above, its just me trying to be efficient!.

One at a time: The Yanmar 336D is quite a bit smaller than your tractor. I know because I like that 5000 series enough that I came real close to buying one new when they first came out. I was looking at the quote the other day. and notice that I had specified the hydraulic reverser 12x12 option ($2678) - not mention of creeper gears. The 5000 series JD is larger than most compact tractors. It is more the size that I would call a farmstead "utility" tractor. By contrast, the Yanmar 336D is more like the size of the mid-to-larger 4000 series JDs. In fact, it is the predecessor to the old 950 and 1050 JD....although the 336D was somewhat heavier and shorter wheelbase, with more sophisiticated hydraulics and transmission.
As I said, I do not use a snow blower at all. We don't get much snow high in the eastern Rockies. I was comparing low speed work, not snow work. The work that I do is mostly landscaper type - pushing through dirt and decomposed granite with loader and blade.
Snow conditions? Neat question. At 7000 feet the typical storm drops around 6" of medium to dry snow. On the sunny slopes it will melt off within the week, and on the shady ones it will remain all winter as an ever-increasing depth of compacted icy concrete that the teeth on the loader barely scratch. Sometimes we will get a 3 foot dump of heavy, wet snow. When that happens I just blade it to the side of my dirt road and let the sun melt it away.

My buddy uses an old upright hot water heater for his roller. It is the gas type rather than electric, so it has a continuous hole right down through the middle. He put a piece of water pipe in that hole and from there brought two arms forward to his three point lift arms. Started with it filled with water, and finally filled the tank with wet cement. It doesn't lift via the 3 pt. He can pull it with the 3pt arms or sometimes he bolts the arms to the FEL bucket and then can lift it up. The weight just about flattens the front tires. But that's ok because as he points out, the tires only have to hold out until the rims hit the ground.......

Tom, I agree that an overrunning clutch is a nice safety feature. But apparently farmers in some other parts of the world not only disagree, but want their tractors without that feature. In the US I think that it is required that new tractors have them now, but apparently it wasn't always that way because older US tractors don't have that overrunning clutch either. Even 20 years ago, all the Yanmars and Kubotas for sale in the US came with internal overrunning clutches. That isn't true of Yanmars and Kubotas built for sale in other countries and then shipped here via the grey market route. Some of those have the clutch and others don't.
Luckily for these older tractors there is an external overrunning clutch that works as good or better than an internal part. I saw some in a tractor magazine for around $50 and it can be slipped onto a PTO shaft in about ten seconds. If you are in doubt about whether your tractor has one, it doesn't hurt to have two.

They both have real good reputations. Not a lot to choose from there. And the specs are so close you won't be able to tell anything important. They look a bit different, and to me that is important.....except I can't decide which one I prefer. Nope, I'd have to make my decision based purely in the subjective realm. I'd chose one because it fits you as you get on and off and because you like the way it "feels". Both are just fine, and 200 hours isn't many.

Worth a look? Of course they are!
Everyone has to eat. And as a nation begins to industrialize, one of the first things that they make are tractors for the local farmers. I think it is reasonable to assume that anyone who would design a tractor for their own local market would make them as good as they possibly could....and to my way of thinking that effort makes them all worth attention. Later in the industrial cycle they begin to export their manufactured goods and so we get to see them over here.
Whether or not they are better than the products of a more mature industry is an interesting question.

Jeeze, studded duogrips...you ought to be able to do wheelies on the ice. I'd sure be curious to know how they work out. I always have to fight the temptation just to put on the fronts, since they are so easy to get on and off if you lift the front end with the loader. But this year we've had so little snow that it hasn't been a factor.
I also like the knotty pine and did a couple of rooms in it. For me it goes up neat, but slow. Retiring the old hand mitre box in favor of one of the new sliding compound 10" Makitas will probably speed things up. It sure makes nicer cuts. Then again, carpentry is not my job, it is my hobby. So it falls in the group of things that proceed at their own pace - with me hoping that they will go slowly. Going fishing is another one of those kinds of things.

Alan, does this tractor live outside or in a wet climate? If so, I'll echo what jd110 says, because the problem with water entering around the shifter boot on that particular tractor is a known and documented problem. Yanmar even sent out service bulletins about it before they re-designed the shifter boot. Another place that rain water can cause trouble on those is by seeping down the steering column where it sits on top of the steering box seal. After enough years pass, some of the water can work its way into the steering box and cause trouble. Some people have had water make its way past the combo fuel cap and gauge.

It seems like the subject of fluid in the tires is always interesting. I think that I learn something each time around. I don't think there will be any difference in traction whether the weight is in the tires or in the form or weights closer to the axle, but there will be a big difference in how long it takes to accelerate and stop. Not that tractors do much of either one, but anyone who does a lot of high speed stop and go driving with their tractor :-) would probably prefer the wheel weights over the fluid fill.

The local Country General stores are having going out of business sales. Is this just a local thing or are people in the other parts of the country seeing this as well? I've heard that it is a national chain, but only know that it is a common chain store in the rural West. They have some amazingly low closeout prices on tractor part and pieces. Dimes on the dollar. What make me think of chain stores was the tractor chain discussion we are having. Down at Country General last weekend I bought new chains for the JD (12.4x36) for a ridiculous price. In fact , these new chains cost me less than the price of piecing together my last set from second hand chains. Sometimes you just get lucky.

Yep, Art I agree with you. Tractors were too heavy for way too long, and the weight was in the wrong places. I go back to the days when engines themselves were not considered to be "variable speed engines". You selected speed with gearing and ran the engine at the rated RPM. There have been lots of advances. I also think that you need enough weight for traction and balance and that is enough. As Cutter says, the materials can change the weight as well. I sure wouldn't rate any tractor on weight as pro or con without taking other things into consideration....just as I wouldn't take the published weight as gospel without using that grain of salt. Art, nothing against tractor salesman. I think I should have made a strong distinction between professional salesman with product knowledge - they are wonderful - and the salesman who are just there to sell product without knowing from experience. Too many of the latter and too few of the good ones. When I find a good salesman I listen carefully to what he has to say. But they are just so darn rare! Or am I falling into "oldfartism"?

Yep, implements tend to rub the tires when the tires are set in close on every tractor I've seen. But few people leave the wheels set to the narrow position unless they have some special requirement like a narrow gate to go through. Even when the tires are set wide, if there isn't some sort of restraint then most 3pt arms can swivel out far enough to hit the tires. That is all normal adjustability.
I think part of the problem is that dealers tend to set the tractors up with the wheels in the narrow position because it saves room, making them easier to park, maneuver, and trailer for delivery....and because the dealer assumes that the buyer is going to adjust the wheels to suit himself anyway. Then we get used to seeing the tractors set up that way at the dealer and it begins to seem normal. But it is only normal at the dealer.

I know exactly how you feel. In the early 1980s I spent a couple of years chasing ads and dealers looking for exactly that kind of deal....Consider that it was years ago, I was willing to go up to nearly $5000, not $3000, and I was not successful. All I had to show for it was a little knowledge and a lot of wear on the 'ol PU. In my opinion you will just waste your time looking for a tractor with a FEL in that price range. As we've mentioned before, tractor prices are pretty stable. They don't seem to have the wide price range that characterizes used cars and other tools.
But there is some good news. You can always add a FEL to a tractor later. Your $3000 will buy you a nice 2wd tractor with enough left over to put a 3 point bucket on the rear. It isn't a FEL, but it can do some of the work of a FEL. If you are willing to look at the grey market machines I think you can take your pick of several nice tractors with standard 3pt hitches in that range.

Anything that will drive a small hydraulic pump is fair game for a loader. You can tie into the tractor's own internal hydraulic system. Some have a port specially for that. But compact tractor hydraulics seem to have low flow rates, so it is popular to drive a faster (engine speed) hydraulic pump coaxially with the crank and driven by an extention in the center of the crank or front pulley. That method is common and I think it is what you are thinking of. Another way is to use the PTO to drive a low speed hydraulic pump from the rear. And yes, I have seen some tractors with a hydraulic pump driven by the fan belt ljust ike an automotive power steering pump.

Bob, I'm glad its working so well. And I sure am glad that Tom mentioned the quantity of shear bolts that you can go thru, because I flat forgot. Nothing worse than sitting in the field with your nice new implement and hearing the bang as the last shear bolt lets go! I don't go through many bolts because of running my own PHD at fairly low RPM. I use the lowest PTO range while running my diesel at the typical "fast idle" speed that works for me - which is around half of the full PTO-rated RPM. Even running so slow my auger can dive too fast. It has never needed down pressure, but has needed to have the teeth and auger screw sharpened. The 4 replaceable digger teeth can be sharpened with a grinder. I'd guess that most auger screw tips can be sharpened a few times. Mine was so beat up after loaning the PHD to a neighbor that it was easier to replace it. It had to be ordered, and the cost was most of $100!!! But it does the job. The tips seem to come in a couple of standard shank sizes plus half a dozen different geometries. A little ingenuity will mount most of them.

We've had a lively discussion on post hole diggers, and part of it started to stray in the direction of structures built with pole foundations. Pole barns and sheds are common in rural areas, I've got a couple of them myself. So it started me wondering how many of us have such a structure and what kind of advice you all would have for someone building one.
I'll start it out by saying that the pole barns that i grew up down south were built on poles set packed earth. After a few years, the poles were noticibly thinner due to rot where they entered the ground. My pole barn today uses pressure treated logs set in drilled holes and surrounded with concrete. After 20 years there isn't a trace of rotted wood.
